REFLECTION ON THE ICOF RENEWAL PROGRAM 2020

The six-month ICOF (Inter-Community Ongoing Formation) Renewal Program took place from January to June 2020.  The Spiritans hosted the program at their Retreat Center in Tengeru, Tanzania, located at the base of the majestic Mount Meru.  The surroundings were beautiful. The climate was very pleasant and refreshing.  Looking back, it was a great blessing to have the time to come away to a quiet place—to pray; to reflect; to learn and study current issues in today’s world; and to visit the events that have shaped one’s life. It was a time to grow in the spiritual life and deepen in one’s relationship with Jesus. Over the six months at Tengeru, it all happened!

Despite the Covid-19 pandemic, the Program was able to continue with all the community members observing the required precautionary measures.  The Directors of the Program were dedicated, qualified and great accompaniers. They often went the extra mile to help the participants with visas, travel, any health concerns and so much more. There was a wonderful community spirit among the Staff and participants in the Program.

The many courses and workshops that were offered were very beneficial and aimed at helping the participants to learn new skills, a new awareness of current issues and many exercises to keep healthy in their future assignments. All the participants had a Staff member accompany them (Co-journey) throughout the Program—meeting weekly. It was an opportunity to do personal work, looking at past experiences and grow in a deeper understanding and acceptance of oneself and others.  Some courses were new and very interesting.  Also, there were assignments given, where each participant would do their homework and research and make a presentation to the group. There was a wonderful eight-day Ignatian Retreat near the end of the six months. It was a mountain top experience. The whole Renewal Program was like a wonderful banquet—you  took what you could and downloaded the various workshop and course materials onto your laptop for future reference.

Many participants took advantage of the fresh mountain air, walking paths and the country roads.  It was normal for many to take a daily hour-long walk in the late afternoon. The country roads are very inviting for joggers (if that is your preference)!

I highly recommend the ICOF Renewal Program to anyone considering a well-deserved break, a sabbatical or a time away to rest, to be renewed and updated and to return to one’s mission or new assignment refreshed and ready.
